This was a delightful book and a quick read. At right around 100 pages and 10 chapters, it is a great fit for the emerging reader looking to move up from young fiction or easy readers into longer middle grade fiction. There’s an illustration in every chapter to help with comprehension too. I really appreciated the diversity-focus of the book. The story does a great job of including culturally-specific details about Thailand and the Thais language in a way that is engaging and relevant to the story. There is a pronunciation guide and glossary in the back, and the character often provide pronunciation tips to each other in context as well. This is a great series to get girls interested in travel and exploring other countries. I will definitely be picking up more of these for my classroom! – The Logonauts

There are so many lessons about traveling as well as about the Thai culture built into the story. Readers do not even realize the book is educational though as it is just fun and when finishing a chapter the reader wants to read the next one. An enjoyable book. The main character is a girl, Nong May, and she uses some of her Thai language throughout the book which is really cool to see and read. She and her American friend, Jess, solve a mystery about a special family treasure. Lots of action, lots of fun through the book. The writing is simple; but that allows the eagerness and determination of the girls to be the focal point in solving the mystery. Lisa Travis wrote her girls as strong, active, spunky, and tenacious. Mystery of the Golden Temple is a part of the Pack-n-Go Girls Adventure Series, it embraces the idea of the “global girl” and the power of celebrating differences. While reading and researching the Pack-n-Go Girls series, I am reminded of Nancy Drew, the Ramona books by Beverly Cleary, and The Babysitters Club books wrapped into one. There is a sense of empowerment when girls are getting the job done! I am one of those girls that felt empowered when I read books similar to this one and the ones listed. Mystery of the Golden Temple starts with Jess Johnson and her family at the airport. Unsure of the new venture, Jess is about to experience an exciting feat in a place called Thailand. Jess makes an everlasting friendship and learns so many new things. While reading this book, I discovered that Thailand is shaped like an elephant’s head and the elephant plays an important role in their history. I also learned about food from Thailand and popular dishes (check out the recipe in the book matter). I enjoyed reading the preview of Jess and Nong May’s next adventure after finishing Mystery of the Golden Temple. I am really anticipating the next journey from these two fun and smart girls! I remember reading The Babysitter’s Club books and Swiss Valley Twins books when I was in 3rd and 4th grade. What I loved about those books were two things that I loved about this book: they were part of a series so I could read more and the friendships that the characters had were what I thought was typical. In this wonderful chapter book Jess and her family travel to Thailand. The problems begin as soon as the family lands and tries to get a taxi ride to their home away from home in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The things that Jess notices about Thailand are wonderful details that any reader will enjoy. It creates a high interest story that is filled with facts for those that have a thirst for knowledge about the world. Facts about Thailand are throughout the book along with a few details about Jess’ hometown of Boston, MA. Written in short chapters with a plot centered around the mystery of the bad luck and missing amulet, this is a fantastic book for 2nd through 5th grade readers. This was a sweet and bright book that includes a mysterious plot and a tale of friendship that should be shared with all young readers. – Mrs. Bussan
