  1. WorldTrek Publishing

The book Mystery of the Troubled Toucan is an adventure travel series for ages 6-9 called A Pack-n-Go Girls Adventure, this book takes place in Brazil and is the first in the series. It is about two girls, Sofia and Júlia, who develop a friendship when Sofia comes from Florida with her dad to visit the Amazon Rainforest. Along with the new experiences the rainforest brings she meets a new friend, Júlia. It’s a mystery that involves a danger signaling toucan, pink dolphins, poachers and two girls who want to save the animals of the rainforest. Not only is it a story about the beautiful country of Brazil but Lisa does a wonderful job of embedding a tricky family situation for Sofia. Her parents are going through a divorce and she is constantly worried throughout the story about what her family will look like when she returns home. Meanwhile Júlia doesn’t seem to worry about too much and often says, “nao se preocupe”, don’t worry when Sofia starts to get upset or worried about something. The friendship the girls build throughout the story is heartwarming. We especially enjoyed the ending of the book when Sofia is on her way home and sees from the airplane the area where two bodies of water meet and she realizes that this is just like her family will be, “separate but together”. Lisa writes with such imagery you feel you’re in the rainforest as the girls experience various animals, plants, food and even the Portuguese language. Reading the story made us want to read more about Brazil and get on an airplane to experience it all ourselves! As a bonus feature at the end of the book there is a place with various lists of interesting facts about Brazil like: the history, government, a map, food, weather, Portuguese/English word translations and a travel journal for those that end up going to the country. – Story Mamas

Mystery of the Troubled Toucan is about a girl named Sofia. Her parents announce they are separating just before her dad brings Sofia along on his work trip to Brazil. Sofia thinks that the trip will be miserable, especially with the news she just received about her parents. When they get to Brazil, Sofia meets Julia, the daughter of a man Sofia’s dad works with. The two soon become good friends and start exploring the Amazon rainforest. Soon they run into a toucan who is squawking like mad. It’s almost as if the toucan wants them to follow it. When the girls discover that the toucan may indeed actually want to lead them somewhere, they discover a situation that they cannot ignore. Mystery of the Troubled Toucan is a great read for those who like adventure stories. Bilingual readers who can read Spanish or Portuguese will enjoy the phrases in different languages scattered throughout the book. I love how the girls are strong-willed and come up with a plan to stop an injustice. I will definitely be reading the other books in the Pack-n-Go Girls series! – Mrs. Freking-Smith’s Library Blog

  3. WorldTrek Publishing

In Mystery of the Troubled Toucan Sofia Diaz, a little girl from Florida is on a vacation with her dad, in Brazil. A lovely friendship, a new language, and adventurous rides on the Rio Negro waters keep her distracted from the difficult family situation back home. However, it’s the mystery she must solve with Júlia (and a squawking toucan!) that makes it a whole lot more interesting! Will Sofia and Júlia save the Amazonian ‘botos’? Yes, you’ll learn more than just what ‘botos’ are – you’ll eat ‘tacacá’, ride into and out of an ‘igarapé’, and also find out what words are the same in Portuguese and Spanish! Informational pages on Brazil and Portuguese complete the package. But the two things I love most: smart, brave female protagonists and bilingualism woven so gracefully into the narrative. With travel, adventure, friendship, and family, central to the stories, the Pack-n-Go Girls series is great for children in middle-upper elementary grades . . . a fun, educational, and exciting chapter book series for children! – InCulture Parent

I loved how the book helped my 7-year old travel without leaving home. The best part is when she added Amazon Rainforest to her list of must visit places. The author’s description of the Amazon Rainforests gets a big thumbs-up. When a book inspires a child to travel, I think the purpose is served. Also, I really liked how the protagonist Sophia is portrayed as a strong, brave problem-solver. No cheesy, sparkly similes and metaphors in this book. My daughter wants to read the other books in the series. Again another win. – PoohsDen

I think we’ve found a new favorite. My 6 year-old and I sat down to read one of the Pack-n-Go Girls Adventures— Mystery of the Troubled Toucan —and when I was called away for other mama duties he just kept on reading it by himself. If that isn’t the seal of approval then I don’t know what is. – Marti Dumas Books

Travis writes clearly and engagingly, infusing the story with information about conservation and the rainforest, as well as Portuguese vocabulary (a glossary is included). Turner’s b&w cartoon spot illustrations do a fine job of capturing the local flora and fauna, while tapping into the unfolding mystery and the camaraderie between the girls. – Publishers Weekly (BookLife)
